Many times, we try to prove our Christianity by spouting off scriptures, but the things people are really looking at involve our character. There are many people who wear the title of “Christian,” but they are not really living for Christ. Now, more than ever, we must allow the true character of God to shine through so others may be drawn into His Kingdom.
When we talk about living for Christ, we are talking about allowing His will to become first and foremost in our lives. It means completely submitting to His Word. A Christian who is truly living for Christ knows Jesus not only as his or her personal Savior, but as Lord as well. When someone is your “lord” it means he or she has the authority to speak into your life and be obeyed. It means his or her words hold more weight in your life than anyone else’s. If Jesus is your Lord, it means you are willing to crucify the desires of your flesh in exchange for His desires.
In John 14:15, Jesus says that if we truly love Him we will keep His commandments. These commandments are to love the Lord with all our hearts, and love our neighbors as we love ourselves. Everything the Bible instructs us to do is birthed out of God’s love; and our obedience to what He says is birthed out of our love for Him. It is through our obedience that our love for God is demonstrated, and when we demonstrate His love, others will be impacted. This is the essence of what it means to live for Christ.
There is a lot of confusion in the world today, and Christians must stand out in the midst of darkness. We can’t do this by acting just like the world and subscribing to its ways of thinking and doing things. We must take a stand for righteousness and truth, even to the point of being persecuted for sharing it. There are those who may not understand or accept the Gospel message, but that shouldn’t hinder us from sharing it. Our hope should be that someone with whom we share Jesus, and to whom we demonstrate the love of God, will come into relationship with Him.
We must never underestimate the power of a life that is submitted to the Word of God and the leadership of the Holy Spirit. There is no way of knowing who is observing our lives and taking notes about us. People always look at what we profess and claim to be and what we demonstrate through our lives, and they draw conclusions about Christianity based on these things. For this reason, we must be sure we are setting good examples and, most importantly, walking in the love of God toward others. In doing so, we become tangible examples of what it means to live for Christ.
